Peter Evans „Being & Becoming“
When Peter Evans formed his quartet Being & Becoming in 2017, the New York trumpeter and composer was still experimenting with the various forms and possibilities of electro-acoustic music. But this quartet marked Evans' reorientation toward purely analog improvisational music.
With vibraphonist Joel Ross, cellist and bassist Nicholas Joszwiak, and drummer Michael Ode, he has like-minded instrumentalists at his side whose sound aesthetic ideas are as uncompromising as Evans's own. These four improvisational musicians are concerned in their interplay with developing an ad hoc vocabulary on stage with which they can intuitively speak their own language.
The band's name derives from the Sufi mystic Inayat Khan and reflects the four's commitment to the challenges of spontaneous creativity. Evans' compositions draw from a variety of sources of both traditional and experimental provenance to provide an adequate foundation for music that is both improvised and composed.
The work is influenced by stylistic masterpieces of jazz history such as McCoy Tyner or John Coltrane, as well as by classics of 20th century European modernism or the aesthetic strategies of collectively led groups such as the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians from Chicago or the Spontaneous Music Ensemble from London.
