NICA live: Luise Volkmann presents Haléïs
NICA live not only brings the music and projects of the NICA artists themselves on stage, it also features musicians and bands they appreciate and would like to bring to the attention of a local audience. Saxophonist Luise Volkmann - NICA artist 2022 - has lived in France. Impressions from this time shape her curation of the evening. For Haléïs, the band of French singer Juliette Meyer, it is the first concert in Germany.
Haléïs means "resounding cry" in ancient French. Initiated by Juliette Meyer in 2020, the band's pieces are shaped by influences such as Babx, Jacques Brel or Barbara. With its repetitive rhythms and powerful upbeats, the song format dominates and leaves room for improvisation. Juliette Meyer's lyrics are full of poetry and marked by the rhythm of French. Inspired by René Char, the thoughts of the poetic I revolves around absence, heartbreak, and silence. An etheric swirling music responds to this inner darkness and gives air to breathe once again. Rooted in the dark, turned towards the light, Haléïs brings to the stage an organic unity between voice and instruments in which words and sound merge.
