»NICA exchange« at Cologne Jazzweek: Deman meets Coudoux/Muche
Curiosity and being in the process are central to the musical work of Belgian musician Berlinde Deman. As an child, Deman did not accept the statement that she was too small for the tuba, made the instrument her own, and has now been playing it for over thirty years. In 2017, she added a serpent to her instrumentarium. With the historical brass instrument, Deman has been excitingly expanding her sound horizons ever since. As part of NICA exchange, the Belgian now meets cellist Elisabeth Coudoux and trombonist Matthias Muche for the first time. For Coudoux - a NICA artist since 2019 - the exploration of the sound spectrum of her instrument, supplemented by other instruments and sound sources, is the search for her own voice. She appreciates the challenge of new encounters and opens herself to them just as open-mindedly and regularly as Deman and Muche. The last one likes to vary his playing setups. Speech, external bells and interactive computer graphics expand his expressive possibilities. One can expect a musical encounter at equals between individual expression and free collective energy.

NICA exchange takes place in cooperation with the NICA artist development program and Cologne Jazzweek. The main focus of the concert series, initiated in 2022, is to create spaces of exchange for a young, experimental generation of musicians, to encourage networking and creative exchange, and at the same time, in the context of the festival, to initiate a connection with an audience open to discovery.
