Eivind Aarset 4tet
'Phantasmagoria or A Different Kind of Journey'
Ambient, post-rock and beat-heavy jazz from Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset and his quartet. Aarset is known for filtering and manipulating his instrument beyond recognition. On his ninth quartet album, 'Phantasmagoria or A Different Kind of Journey' (Jazzland Recordings, 2021), the 60-year-old avant-garde musician allows a clear electric guitar sound to shine through for the first time in years. Aarset gradually runs through the full range of his instrument's sonic possibilities: from Joe-Pass-sounds to atmospheric soundscapes, from rapid shredding to controlled noise and signal.
Eivind Aarset began his music career as a guitarist in a heavy metal band before discovering his love for improvised music. His debut album 'Électronique Noire' was released in 1998 on Bugge Wesseltoft's label Jazzland Records. By this time, however, Aarset had already collaborated on more than 150 albums, including those by renowned artists such as Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ute Lemper, Ketil Bjørnstad, Django Bates and Rebekka Bakken. He also gained notoriety for his collaboration with Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær. His current album 'Phantasmagoria or A Different Kind of Journey' follows up 'Walk Through Lightly' with Dark Star Safari from 2021.
