Born in Moscow in 1972, Maria Stepanova is considered the most important Russian author of her generation. In March 2022, she was one of the signatories of an appeal to spread the truth about the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The way she deals with history and the transfiguration of an imaginary past are also central themes in her works. Whether it's a novel, an essay, or a cycle of poems, Stepanova always questions Russia's collective memory, which the Kremlin today invokes in its warfare. "Deep humanity and outstanding acumen characterize this book, which offers the highest instruction and the highest enjoyment," wrote the NZZ about her novel "After Memory," which was shortlisted for the international Booker Prize: "Last but not least, the humor saves her from falling prey to a blind cult of the past." Now, in April, her latest book will be published in German, written in a frenzy of poetic inspiration in Moscow during the pandemic. "Winter Poem" speaks of banishment and exile, of social isolation and existential abandonment - prophetically also of the present. Stepanova currently lives in Berlin.
