Cologne Jazzweek: Stemeseder & Lillinger Quartett – Umbra II (feat. Peter Evans & Joe Sanders)
"Umbra" is the second part of the album trilogy by Austrian pianist, electronic musician and composer Elias Stemeseder and German drummer and founder of Plaist Records, Christian Lillinger, which stands for "genre-free" music. In "Umbra", too, historical instruments from the Baroque period such as the spinet are alienated and expanded in terms of sound as an exploration of the physical principles of time and space. "Umbra" is conceived as a duo plus guests. Stemeseder and Lillinger have invited the New York trumpeter and sound researcher Peter Evans, who plays trumpet and piccolo trumpet here, as well as the US bassist Joe Sanders, who currently lives in France. Sanders, born in Milwaukee in 1984, studied at the Brubeck Institute with Christian McBride and at the Thelonious Monk Institute. In the New York Times, saxophonist Joshua Redman described him as "one of the greats of his generation and one of the most active and most imitated musicians on the scene today." In addition to Redman, Sanders has also played with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Charles Lloyd, among others.
