Ausverkauft: WDR Big Band feat. Mark Lettieri & Snarky Puppy Rhythm #2
On paper, the math seems simple: Mark Lettieri plus Jason "JT" Thomas equals concentrated fusion power, quasi "Snarky Puppy without horns". They are joined by Wes Stephenson on bass, Billy Test on piano and Daniel Porter on keyboards, further musicians from the Texas scene and thus the extended Snarky Puppy environment. If you add the WDR Big Band with its brilliant horns instead of Snarky Puppy, the result should be a somehow related sound spectrum. Which all too quickly turns out to be a milquetoast calculation: There is no doubt that the spectacular formation "WDR Big Band + Snarky Puppy Rhythm Section" guarantees a maximum of power and energy, and yet the musical result should bring something completely new, possibly even previously unheard - a large ensemble of a new kind: The New Funky Side of Things!
In fact, guitarist Mark Lettieri is one of Snarky Puppy's style-defining musicians, and Jason Thomas also contributes to the group's unmistakable sound in the lush drum and percussion section. The fusion jazz-rock formation from Texas meanders through sometimes lyrical, sometimes grooving textures with cool brass sections, thunderous percussion, rocking guitar and clashing keyboard attacks in a powerful, often ecstatic manner. All the guest musicians involved are also pursuing their own projects, which have one thing in common: Between jazz, blues, funk, fusion, flowing harmonies and melodies, they simply make good music. And this also applies to the trio, in which Lettieri's ingenious guitar designs whirringly glide over Stephenson's cool lines on the five-string electric bass and Thomas' tight rhythm.
And the WDR Big Band? The mighty orchestra, which can simply do anything, has always explored its large orchestral expressive possibilities between tradition and modernity with confidence and an open mind. After playing a phenomenal concert in the Philharmonie with Snarky Puppy co-founder Bill Laurance in 2019, the band is now performing a sequel of sorts with Mark Lettieri and his colleagues. Surprises and unpredictable twists and turns are guaranteed!
