Bugge Wesseltoft, Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund recently released their third studio album, Valleys & Mountains. More rested than ever, these veterans of Nordic jazz celebrate their acoustic-electronic compositions.

Mountains and valleys are not just the result of geological processes. They have always been symbols of good and bad times for people. Wesseltoft, Öström and Berglund have experienced some of these over the last 30 years - but recently, the path has mainly led uphill. Since 2019, the Swedish-Norwegian band Rymden (meaning "space" or "outer space") has released two studio albums and one live record. The mix of acoustic and electronic sounds was enthusiastically received by audiences and the press alike. "It's great music and great fun" concluded the blog thejazzmann.com in its review of "Space Sailors".

Valleys & Mountains is the Scandinavians' third album. It once again celebrates the trio's love of virtuoso music in the style of the seventies - fusion jazz, prog rock and even classical music. There are surprising time changes, abysmally thunderous bass lines and shimmering synthesizer pads. One thing is clearly recognizable: Rymden have never sounded so rested. Over the course of hundreds of concerts, this band has found itself and has long known exactly what it wants.

This Scandinavian supergroup came about because the award-winning Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, a great advocate of "European jazz as an art form in its own right" (quote from Wesseltoft), longed for a piano trio, for something close to his feelings and musical expression. So he invited two friends and innovative forces in European jazz: Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund.
With their groups e.s.t. (esbjörn svensson trio) and Bugge's New Conception Of Jazz, the three like-minded artists have been creating music history in parallel since the mid-1990s. Both formations, which toured worldwide, defined a new, fresh sound on an international level - with great openness to experimentation and radical thinking. The result was an international music movement that became an inspiration for future generations.
With his artist platform (and record label) Jazzland, Wesseltoft was a pioneer and is still an important promoter in the modernization of Scandinavian jazz today. e.s.t. was the first band ever to perform in rock and jazz clubs, classical music concert halls and, of course, on the biggest stages of music festivals worldwide.
