The "Julius van Rhee Quintet" brings together five young idiosyncratic musicians in an exciting project. The bandleader's compositions bring the contrasts of simplicity and complexity together. Strong, vocal melodies combine with complex rhythms and touching harmonies, expressing the emotional content of the pieces, which deal with loneliness, fear and separation, but also with hope and love. The individual characters of the musicians merge into a unity and by breaking out of it again and again the music remains surprising and varied.
