Schlippenbach Trio
Winterreise
The Schlippenbach Trio is an institution in European improvisational music.
For fifty years, Alexander von Schlippenbach has toured Europe with his trio every winter. This year, the 86-year-old pianist will once again embark on such a "winter journey", albeit with his renewed ensemble. Clarinettist Rudi Mahall (Der Rote Bereich, SoKo Steidle) was last with us with Aki Takases Japanic. Norwegian percussionist Dag Magnus Narvesen (Kitchen Orchestra, Japanic) previously worked with Von Schlippenbach on Liminal Field, a duo album full of uncompromising improvisations.
The Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio laid the foundations for European improvised music in the late 1960s. Each of their concerts is a completely new journey of discovery for the trio, but recognizable elements remain.
"Breathtaking technique coupled with pure instinct" (The Wire about the Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio).
And just to mention a few of his awards: Von Schlippenbach is the recipient of the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize (1994), the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany (2017). And in 2024 he received the Berlin Jazz Award and the German Jazz Award for his life's work and in the category "Piano/Keyboard Instruments.
