ritual // Yara Mekawei & The Shrine

Yara Mekawei is the first woman to make a career in the experimental music scene in Cairo. Ancient Sufi philosophies are a fixed star in her work: for years, she has studied the "Book of the Dead", an ancient Egyptian manifesto that describes the preparation of souls for their journey to life after death. The book is a comprehensive guide to the esoteric knowledge of the Islamic tradition and is considered one of the most influential works on Islamic occultism. Yara Mekawei translates the ancient texts into sound using modern technology. The result is a fascinating collage of traditional chants and artistic timbres. Mekawei's works and sound sculptures reflect her personal interpretation of ancient religious texts and are, as it were, utopias for the composer. "I am fighting against old taboos!"
Before the concert there will be a joint listening walk. Meeting point is at 19.00h in front of the entrance to the JAKI / concert hall.

ritual is a concert series - curated by Sophie Emilie Beha - which takes place from June to November on the 1st day of each month in various locations around the Stadtgarten, further information via the ritual homepage.
