An extraordinary band that turns everything we know about this familiar jazz line-up on its head and shows it in a new light. The Berlin-Cologne quartet PHILM hits the bull's eye of the Zeitgeist target and maintains its bursting energy level, especially live. Saxophonist Philipp Gropper, Elias Stemeseder on piano and keyboards, bassist Robert Landfermann and percussionist Oliver Steidle have little to do with postmodernism. Instead of shining individually, they prefer to shine as a group. They are not interested in association and deconstruction, but in creation and sharing. How old-fashioned. How revolutionary.
A compactly balanced group sound full of robust suppleness, music that doesn't beat around the bush, but goes straight to the core and stays there. Tight parallelism between saxophone and keyboards, a powerful double bass at the instrument's upper limit and drums that can always push forward and take new directions. PHILM will be releasing two new albums on January 27, which they will of course be bringing with them to the Stadtgarten.
