NICA live: Bergman · Meier · Pires · Ringa Karahona: Pipedreams
The young flautist, composer and arranger Jorik Bergman (NICA artist 2024) has also demonstrated her versatility and joy of playing in the recent past. Her imaginative concert programs and band constellations such as the quintet Take Me To Space, her duo Jocra Likra with pianist Clara Vetter or Jorik's large, imaginary big band constellation surprise with their eclectic richness of color.
The bustling musician also has other ground-breaking achievements from the year 2025 to her name: Bergman received the Jazz Prize of the City of Cologne as well as the opportunity to work with the original rock star Marshall. Back in 2024, she arranged the piece "African Sunset" for the debut album of saxophonist Allen, who is now 101 years old, and got the chance to perform with him and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Last but not least, Bergman also shone once again as Head of Arrangement for the Week-End Fest, for which she created new music for the musicians Neue Grafik and Charles Tolliver, among others.
Bergman sets no limits to her expression - as she said in an interview for Kaput Magazine: "Fear of contact? No!" And so the composer is once again embarking on an original experiment for her NICA live concert in May: Pipedreams.
The focus of this concert is the flute in all its facets: acoustic or opening up into the electronic through effects, sometimes transparently fragile, sometimes dense and floating. Flutist, composer and NICA artist Jorik Bergman has invited colleagues from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany for this occasion.
Nancy Meier, Ketija Ringa Karahona, Lúcia Pires and Jorik Bergman combine an artistic practice between contemporary music, improvisation and experimental sound formats. The flutists' individual approaches have in common the use of extended playing techniques and a pronounced joy of discovery. Now these experiences and aesthetic perspectives come together and condense into a common sound space.
