LUX Quartet: Melford / Stephens / Dunston / Miller
If you have visions, you should - make music! At least if it's up to the Lux Quartet, which unites pianist Myra Melford and drummer Allison Miller, two of the leading artists of modern improvised music of our time. Together with saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Nick Dunston, they create a soundscape that radiates an intense yet nurturing energy. Inspired by their shared passion for nature and their innovative musical approach, they combine original compositions with a deep connection to the natural world.
The title of their latest album "Tomorrowland" suggests that the Lux Quartet will continue to pursue their creative approach in the new program and once again unfold their own ideas of the future. As a well-rehearsed team, the combo can rely on each other rock solid and is therefore able to play itself into every conceivable musical place with free improvisations. According to Melford, the sound that results from this combination of musicians is "like throwing a spark on tinder - everything immediately goes up in flames".
The name Lux Quartet refers to the life-giving power of light, from the energy of the sun's rays to bioluminescence in the deep sea. This reflects the musical highs and lows that the group explores. Melford and Miller have both already explored nature in their work, as evidenced by Melford's projects such as "Snowy Egret" and Miller's "Rivers in Our Veins". Their collaboration in the quartet is an extension of their years of work in Miller's ensemble "Boom Tic Boom".
