Dizzie Gillespie called him "perhaps the best percussionist of all time"; Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderley and Stevie Wonder included him in their bands; he was president of the Chicago AACM and was on a first-name basis and friends with the members of the Art Ensemble: The merits of Kahil El'Zabar, born in the Windy City in 1953, are numerous - and yet the magic of the drummer, percussionist and representative of traditional African music can only be experienced in the live moment of a concert. This is where El'Zabar's spiritual jazz comes into its own and becomes that unique art form that is able to recreate itself in every improvisation and interpretation. In concert, he becomes a Spirit Gatherer.
