Jazz at JAKI: Malstrom
Malstrom is a musical powerhouse from Germany and Switzerland. Their music moves between progressive rock, nu metal, electronic textures and free improvisation - constantly changing, colliding and dissolving. Instead of following genre rules, the band sees composition as a living system: structures are complex but never rigid, and improvisation serves not as decoration but as a driving force. Jazz language meets the raw energy of 90s rock and metal, shaped into dense, often brutal soundscapes.
The trio's sound is characterized by 8-string guitar, saxophone and relentless grooves that create massive walls of sound and repetitive ostinati, drawing the listener into a vortex in which precision and chaos, composition and spontaneity coexist. Malstrom has released six albums and has been touring internationally for over ten years. The band has played in Japan, China, India, Israel, throughout South America and Europe - including international festivals, club concerts and workshops.
The maelstrom devours everything that comes within its reach - light, sound, matter. It draws everything into its vortex and ever deeper into its swirling center. What lies at its core? The eye of the storm? An abyss, pure nothingness? Or a moment of calm that contrasts with the raging edges? And above all: are you ready to find out?
