Jazz at JAKI: Leon Hattori - Evergreen Forest
With Evergreen Forest, the young German-Japanese pianist Leon Hattori presents his debut album, which was released in April 2024 on the Toy Piano Records label. For his own compositions, Hattori drew inspiration from the North American jazz greats Fred Hersch and Renee Rosnes, as well as from his experiences in the various countries where he grew up: Japan, the country of his childhood, and New Zealand, where he spent his teenage years. In "Reading the air" (jap. Kuuki wo yomu), for example, Hattori works with a basic concept of Japanese culture and in the composition Evergreen Forest he develops the idea of New Zealand's giant ferns, which constantly develop anew from tiny, spiral-shaped shoots and form impressive evergreen forests.
Chris Mehler (trumpet), Adrian Gallet (tenor saxophone), Leon Hattori (piano/composition), Tabea Kind (bass), Simon Bräumer (drums)
