Jazz at JAKI: Denis Gäbel Quartett

The Good Spirits

Saxophonist and composer Denis Gäbel, who curated the "Jazz at JAKI" series until 2021, is returning to JAKI with his quartet. "This quartet is a sensation... What happens with Denis Gäbel's compositions from this fourfold competence is simply magnificent. From unwieldy themes, sometimes reminiscent of Thelonious Monk's mysterious bebop phrases, entire sound complexes are developed so musically and logically as if they had been conceived according to the golden ratio of jazz improvisation. You can't get enough of listening to these counterpoints and impulses that wander from one player to the next, are transformed, reenter the bubbling creative process, only to conjure up something new in the next second... It doesn't get any better than this."
(Wolfgang Sandner, FAZ)

Denis Gäbel was a professor of saxophone in Vienna and has been a member of the hr Big Band in Frankfurt since 2022. During his career, he has shared the stage with Dusko Goykovich, Frank Chastenier, Clarence Penn and Reuben Rogers, among others. On this evening, he will perform jazz standards as well as his own compositions.
