Darius Jones fLuXkit Vancouver (i̶t̶s̶ suite but sacred)
Darius Jones has created a distinctive voice for himself as a saxophonist and composer by internalizing individuality and innovation in the tradition of Black music. As a composer and musician, he works in the fields of electro-acoustic and experimental music, chamber music and jazz, as well as in modern dance and multimedia contexts. His music is a confrontation with apathy and ego, hoping to inspire an authenticity that compels us to be better people.
Darius Jones' project fLuXkit Vancouver (i̶t̶s̶ suite but sacred) was commissioned by Western Front, an artist-run center in Vancouver, Canada, which has always been committed to multidisciplinary exchange, experimentation and the avant-garde. Jones developed the project there in a series of on-site residencies. Recorded in June 2022 at Western Front's Grand Luxe Hall, Jones' new album fLuXkit Vancouver (i̶t̶s̶ suite but sacred) was released in September 2023 by Northern Spy and We Jazz Records.
As Harmony Holiday writes in her liner notes: "The playing here is great, but what stands out most is the austerity of the compositions, which feel like an homage to Sun Ra's call that 'only the impossible happens'. Their mood is expansive, joyful, wistful, sometimes frantic, but always so coherent and balanced that listening to them one can only marvel at this fluid language of wanting and not wanting that lives here alone."
Darius Jones lives in Brooklyn, NY. He is a Signature Artist of the Monheim Triennial II (2023-2025). He was the 2022 Artist in Residence and Curator of the MATA Festival, where he premiered Colored School No. 3 (Extra Credit). In 2021, Jones released Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation) on Northern Spy Records.
Jones has been awarded the Van Lier Fellowship, the Jerome Foundation Artist-in-Residence and a commission, the Western Front Residency and a commission, the French-American Jazz Exchange Award, the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation Award, and a commission from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. Jones has been widely recognized not only for his studio albums of music and images reminiscent of Black Futurism, but also for his commissioned work as a composer in the United States and Canada.
