The Dutchman Christof van der Ven has been making music for over ten years. He toured as a temporary member with bands like Bear's Den, The Staves and The Boxer Rebellion, lived for many years in Ireland and now in London, travelled around the world, released four EPs. Over the years he collected material for his debut album "Empty Handed", which finally saw the light of day in 2018. Between 02 and 05 October Christof van der Ven comes to Germany for three shows in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne.
Christof van der Ven grew up near Eindhoven. Constantly sprinkled with the music of the mother, between classical music and the protest folk of the 60s and 70s. As a young adult he moved to Galway in Ireland, stayed four years and recorded his first two EPs with the financial support of some friends. A move to London followed, where he first made another "career" by chance: because of his creative cooking skills, he literally rose from dishwasher to head chef - an occupation that was fun for him, but could never have replaced music.
Little by little the qualities of the young Dutchman got around in the London music scene - with great subtlety he always knows how to put his playing entirely into the service of a song and at the same time give it an unmistakable stamp. A whole series of bands made use of these qualities, especially Bear's Den, with whom Christof van der Ven toured the US and Europe several times.
Meanwhile he wrote and arranged his own songs bit by bit. Without any pressure, but only with the aim to make every single song something unique. As his debut album "Empty Handed" proves, he has done a great job. His songs are all based on the anti-folk of recent years, enwrapped by many sonic gimmicks: Massive use of keyboards, strange field sounds and a highly individual sense of sound aesthetics. Accordingly, it should be a wonderful sound experience to experience these rich and multi-layered songs live during his three German concerts in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne between 02 and 05 October.
