Brian Marsella Trio
Brian Marsella is a pianist, composer, bandleader and educator based in New Jersey, NY. DownBeat magazine writes "a more versatile and talented pianist would be hard to find", which is due in no small part to the many different projects Marsella has dedicated himself to. The idea for his second piano trio with Kenny Wollesen and Trevor Dunn came from a suggestion by his close collaborator John Zorn. The three musicians came together for the first time in 2016 to play compositions from Zorn's collection "The Bagatelles" - and the joy of playing among the musicians has continued ever since. The Brian Marsella Trio recorded three albums, two with music by John Zorn and one album with Marsella's compositions called Intersection of Dissections.
Brian Marsella has already released 30 albums as leader or co-leader and can be heard on a further 50 recordings, almost half of which were released on John Zorn's Tzadik label. The Philadelphia-born musician moved to New York in 1998 and has been touring and recording ever since. His projects include the large ensembles iMAGiNARiUM and Gatos do Sul, the jazz quintet The Flail, the psychedelic surf-rock trio The Modulators, Archipelago X (with Ikue Mori and Sae Hashimoto) and two acoustic piano trios, one of them with Christian McBride and Anwar Marshall, for which the album OUTSPOKEN: The Music of Hasaan Ibn Ali was voted Best of 2018 by The New York City Jazz Record.
