Brìghde Chaimbeul - Sunwise
Reihe: Reconstructing Song
In just a few years, the young Scottish composer and bagpiper Brìghde Chaimbeul has found her way from the competition stages of the Highlands to the big stages of the international avant-garde. With her third album Sunwise (2025), she opens up the world of Scottish smallpipes even further: between ancient rituals, Gaelic folklore and hypnotic sound research. Dark, earthy drones give rise to fine melodies that seem to waft over from another time - at once archaic and radically contemporary.
Chaimbeul, celebrated by The Guardian ("Best Folk Album 2023") and The Quietus, recently played at festivals such as Big Ears (US), Le Guess Who? (NL) and the Monheim Triennale (D) - where they surprised audiences who were often hearing Smallpipes for the first time ever. Her music evokes landscape and seasons, winter customs and myths, but also incorporates voices from her family, field recordings and minimalist influences. Sunwise is a work of transformation - an invitation to fall under the spell of an instrument that wanders between hearth and future music.
Jrpjej (Ored Recordings) open the evening with post-traditional Circassian music. Shichepshin, apapshin, accordion and percussion create a surprisingly dense sound that is more reminiscent of metal or experimental electronics than folklore. At the center is the actress and singer Svetlana Mamresh, whose voice bridges the gap between Circassian tradition, almost forgotten vocal practice and European classical music.
