Bodurov Trio w/ Hayden Chisholm
A poignant voice opens the latest album by the Bodurov Trio: the title track Senkya Padna contains a sample of an elderly woman singing an archaic traditional folk song. It forms the basis for the dynamic interplay between piano, double bass and drums, which characterizes the band as well as the combination of Bulgarian folk music with contemporary jazz and classical compositions. The trio was founded in 2001 by the Bulgarian pianist and composer Dimitar Bodurov, who lives in Amsterdam and whose fascination for the traditional songs and melodies of his home country has developed into a unique and unmistakable style. Nevertheless, his trio sounds unmistakably contemporary with its close interactions and lively rhythmic structures.
The Bodurov Trio has released six albums and collaborated with famous names such as acclaimed Bulgarian kaval player Theodosii Spassov, Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim and Israeli trumpeter Itamar Borochov.
This evening's special guest is the New Zealand saxophonist and clarinettist Hayden Chisholm. The trio also has a long-standing musical friendship with him.
