With Philip Catherine, Paul Heller invites far more than "just" an outstanding jazz guitarist to Cologne's Stadtgarten: Thanks to the Belgian, one breathes in the spirit of almost 60 years of music and musician history and memories of numerous stations and constellations are awakened.
Already in 1971/72 he played in the band "Experience" with Jean-Luc Ponty and Joachim Kühn, together with Charlie Mariano and Jasper van't Hof he founded the group "Pork Pie" and virtually co-invented a piece of European jazz-rock. Unforgettable is his first solo LP "September Man" with an enigmatic cover that could well show the meadow in Cologne's Volksgarten. Catherine played with numerous jazz greats, including Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Carla Bley, Miroslav Vitous, Larry Coryell and above all: Niels-Henning Örsted-Pedersen, with whom he made three epochal records.
Currently, their closest and most intensive collaboration is with Martin Sasse: in addition to their own compositions, they revive classics by Cole Porter, George Gershwin or Richie Beirach. This time their intimate encounter is spiced up by the sometimes funky sparks, sometimes balladic saxophone of their host.
Philip Catherine (guitar), Paul Heller (tenor saxophone), Martin Sasse (piano)
