"Mother" is an expression of German-Greek musician Athina Kontou's exploration of the musical culture of her Greek homeland. With this ensemble she explores the Greek music world and asks herself how her identity as a jazz musician and her Greek roots are connected. She enriches the traditional music with contemporary sound worlds and creates an atmosphere that is intuitively understandable and very personal. With her on stage are three outstanding young musicians of the Cologne jazz scene, who have a strong sound language of their own and who shape the music and bring it to life with their expressiveness: Luise Volkmann on alto and soprano saxophone, Lucas Leidinger on piano and Dominik Mahnig on drums. A special guest on stage this evening is Koray Berat Sari, a master of various traditional string instruments, who has already enriched the album "Tzivaeri" with his playing.
The repertoire of the ensemble includes arrangements of music from different styles and countries of origin: traditional dances, rembetiko and compositions by contemporary Greek artists. Mother's debut "Tzivaeri" was released in August on nWog-Records, Nils Wogram's label, and was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award.
