Meshell Ndegeocello - No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin
Support: Jake & Abe
"Playing music is one of the few areas where I feel gender- and ethnicity-free," says GRAMMY®-winning bassist, singer and songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello. With musical tastes as broad as her discography is long, Ndegeocello sacrifices genres in favor of originality, celebrity in favor of longevity, and musical trends in favor of musical truths.
Meshell Ndegeocello's highly anticipated new album No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin is part of her ever-evolving exploration of the writer and activist. In concert, this is at once worship, celebration, testimony and call to action - a cross-genre invitation to reflect, revolutionize and transform. It is the work of an uncompromising artist at the height of her creative powers.
The musical visionary can be experienced live at the Stadtgarten Köln on Sunday, November 3rd.
(The concert originally planned for November 4 has unfortunately been canceled for technical reasons).
Blue Note Records released the album No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin on 02 August 2024 in honor of Baldwin's 100th birthday, which was exactly on this day.
Ndegeocello was one of the first artists to be signed to Madonna's label Maverick Records. Her debut album Plantation Lullabies was released there in 1993, a blockbuster that included her twice Grammy-nominated hit single "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)". After contributing to Blue Note Records releases by Robert Glasper and Jason Moran, her own Blue Note debut, The Omnichord Real Book, won a Grammy Award in 2023.
Ndegeocello is primarily a bassist and brings her warm, fat and melodic groove to everything she does. She has played with the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston and Chaka Kahn. As for her own influences as a bassist, she names Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Family Man Barrett and Stevie Wonder. Meshell Ndegeocello is always grateful for the opportunity to share the stage with her and believes that music is a community. She spreads this gospel with every creation and collaboration.
