When the Poems Do What They Do

aja monet is a Grammy-nominated surrealist blues poet. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she won the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam Poetry Award at the age of 19 and is part of a long tradition of poets actively participating in and shaping social movements. Her poems are works of gravity. They are a foundation from which all things are drawn to, pondered over and moved towards. Her work constantly moves between origin and outcome, allowing both to exist in interaction. On her debut album, when the poems do what they do, her tireless commitment to finding the right words is evident. The thematic origins of this album sometimes revolve around black resistance, love and the inexhaustible search for joy. The songs are consistently haunting and unrelenting, some reminiscent of tumult and live club virtuosity, while others are like a healing balm for the soul, moving like a call to intercessory prayer.
